Traditional Chinese Medicine vs Western Medicine vs Food

Last Friday a friend shared with me about Chinese medicine, which is usually claimed to be safer and lesser side effects.

This Chinese medicine is very commonly recommended when a person is having flu, fever and fever.

Thankfully equipping with the Nutritional Immunology, instead of looking at the function of the medicine, first thing that I look at is the labels.

Some of you probably seen this before as it's available at over the counter.

First thing that I saw in the label is Ephedrae

Often we thought since it's plant food, it must be safe.

However, Natural isn't Always Safe

For example, Ephedrae

Ephedrae is a common plant exists in weight loss products. FDA actually banns the use of the Ephedrae in dietary supplement.

However, why it appears in medicine for flu, cough and fever?

It turns out that it's being used in medicine because of it's ability to induce sweating!

In Harvard Health,

  • "In 2003, FDA announced it was banning the sale of products containing ephedra."

  • "It claims for promoting weight loss as well as for increasing energy and alertness"

  • "Side effects of herb include heart palpitations, nausea, and vomiting. More than 800 dangerous reactions have been reported, among them, heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and sudden death"

  • "According to Annals of Internal Medicine, ephedra products make up only 1% of herbal supplement sales in US, but they are responsible for 62% of herbal related reports to poison control centers"

Natural is not always safe.

If it's safe, it should be able to be consumed on daily basis.

The question that I will always ask is that, is pregnant lady, kids or infant, elder safe to consumer the products?
